Why Become a Life Coach?

It used to be said that there was there was little competition to become a life coach because personal coaching is a new field in the UK and elsewhere. In fact these days there are significant numbers of people wanting to become life coaches but being a coach still has undoubted attractions:

  • You are doing something which helps people to achieve change or solve life problems
  • You are supporting people to decide what they want to do with their life and to make progress in career, relationships or personal development
  • You can work from home (if desired) and have the autonomy of setting up your own business and being able to make your own decisions about:
    • the areas of coaching that you want to specialise in
    • the coaching techniques that you want to develop and use most
    • the types of client that as a life coach, business coach or executive coach you are are going to focus on working with

What Qualifications do Life Coaches Need?

At the time of writing (2009) in the UK there is no specific qualification or certification that is required to practise as a life coach and this has led to some criticism. However, many life coaches do have a high degree of training and may have worked in related areas with related professional qualifications before entering the field (I myself qualified as a social worker before becoming a life coach).

Life Coach Training

If you are looking for a career as a life coach then there are a plethora of life coach training courses available to choose from, some better than others.

Before you embark on a particular coach training courses, it is worthwhile investing some time in exploring the different options available (for example, some are provided by distance learning, others by face to face coach training and some involve an element of supervised practice whereas others may be more paper based qualifications and theoretical).

Think about what you personally want to get out of the coach training. Are you looking simply for a short introduction to the field of life coaching or are you looking to top up existing skills or are you wanting a comprehensive life coach training course which will not only give you all the skills that you need to practise as a life coach but also will cover important areas such as how to market and develop your coaching business.
